Crónica y Opiniones / Chronicle & Opinions – GP. Malasia 2009

In summary we can say that the Grand Prix of Malaysia 2009 was crazy. Only four times the drivers were given half of the points, without completing 75% of the race, and last Sunday was the fifth time. A typical storm for this area of the world forced those responsible to stop the race, not by rain but by the poor visibility at the hour the race must be restarted (remember that the race started at 17:00 local time), and deprived us of the last 27 laps .

We highlight the poor performance of the Ferrari team, it seems that since the end of last season they have lost their way and travel to drift. On Saturday, Massa was out of the first change in classification to consider his team the time it had achieved in the first bars of the Q1 was enough to move to the Q2 (not so). Sunday they took a big risk in the first stop for Raikkonen, put tires for extreme rain when it was not raining and the Finnish shattered them in a few laps.

It became apparent after two races the team Brawn is in another level, they took a lot of advantage to other teams. This is clearly shown (this change is also evident in the first sentence of paragraph) to see Button won the race after making four stops, three more than second placed Nick Heidfeld. The advantage they had at the start of the rain were allowed to enter the times that were necessary to get the correct tire.

As for Alonso and Renault we believe that the most important thing in this race was the start , with the experience of the two times champion (and the use kers) allowed him to climb from ninth position to third, when he began to slow down the drivers after him cause he has much more fuel than his persecutors.

Good performance for Hamilton and a very bad one for Kovalainen in the Mclaren team, after both drivers did not pass the Q2 they could put a lot of fuel and left their first stop for later, that helped Hamilton to gain some positions, at the time at which it started to rain he was behind Alonso and was what abled to anticipate the use of brakes and not going out of the circuit.

At the moment it started to rain the race became crazy, it was impossible to know who was before and who behind, who had changed to rain and extreme tires and who went dry ones. Those tire changes, and those pit stops at boxes, excursions to the gravel, etc, turned the race into a lottery. Some pilots have benefited from the situation and others were affected, we believe therefore that the final classification is not very real.
